Sunday Thoughts August 21, 2022

My husband and I went to our nieces mission farewell today in Idaho, where she and the other sister speaking were given the same assignment based on the General Conference talk given in April 2022 by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf “Our Heartfelt All”

Some of the things that were spoken touched me. Things I need to do better.

“If we want the Savior to lift us heavenward, then our commitment to Him and His gospel can’t be casual or occasional.”

As we are on our journey, don’t compare ourselves to others. The measure of our hearts is better than the amount given.

The Book of Mormon prophet Amaleki plead: “Come unto Christ, who is the Holy One of Israel, and partake of his salvation, and the power of his redemption Yea, come unto him, and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him.

How is this possible? I know with myself such a standard of whole soul commitment seems out of my reach. I feel that I am stretched thin. How can I balance the many demands of life with my desires to offer my whole soul to the Lord?

The analogy of riding a bike was given. How balance and moving forward is necessary. It requires time, practice and patience. Looking ahead is the only way to stay balanced. Don’t look at my feet but look ahead to the destination, Get Moving!

An analogy of there being a jar. First filled with stones. Is it full? You might think so. Then you add some pebbles. Is it full? Perhaps. Then you add come sand. Indeed it is full.

If we put the sand in first, then the pebbles and the the rocks, they won’t all fit. We won’t have time for the important things. Sacrificing something that is holding us back.

“Being a disciple of Jesus Christ in not just one of the many things we do. The Savior is the motivating power behind all that we do. He is not a rest stop in our journey. He is not a scenic byway or even a major landmark. He is “the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by [Jesus Christ]. That is the way and our ultimate destination.”

Accomplishing this will not be easy, it requires both sacrifice and consecration.

It requires letting some things go and letting other things grow.

To sacrifice means to give something up in favor of something more valuable. Throughout history, faithful Saints have sacrificed personal desires, comforts, and even their lives for the Savior.

Consecration is different from sacrifice in one important way. We don’t leave our sacrifice but rather, we put it to use in the Lord’s service. We receive the talents that the Lord has given us and strive to increase them, manifold, to become even more helpful in building the Lord’s kingdom.
