Rain, rain, don’t go away…

The old song we used to sing about the rain, has taken a different tone with me.

Here are some lyrics to a Show Tune that came to me: Singin in the Rain, just singin in the rain, it’s raining in Utah I’m happy again. There’s clouds in the sky and puddles on the ground, I’m singin, just singin in the rain.

These pictures are a lot of what most people have been dealing with this year.

Water shortages can mean food shortages.

The Hoover Dam makes electricity, and there were shortages and a lot more darkness is Vegas this year.

Water is SO important. Even more than food. You can live quite a while without food, but only 3 days without water.

Water is also very important for sanitation purposes. Keeping clean, especially your hands is a great way to keep you and others from getting sick.

Storing water can be hard if you don’t know where to start, or how much to store, or even how to make water you find during an emergency, safe.

It is recommended that 1 gallon of water per person for drinking each day is needed. More if there is strenuous work involved.

Plus, it’s good to have 1 gallon of water per person for sanitation each day. That’s for bathing, dishes, laundry and washing of hands. Yep, 1 gallon, so it can’t be wasted and used wisely to make it stretch as far as it can.

We have 55-gallon drums in our back yard, we built the racks (quite a while ago) and I am embarrassed to say, we have not put the barrels on the racks and filled them.

I have been told that you need to cover the barrels COMPLETELY with UV Black Plastic to keep algae from growing in the barrels.

I have also learned that the regular garden hoses we all use, usually contain Lead. What!? So, I purchased an RV hose for using to fill those barrels.

We also reuse our empty laundry detergent bottles to store water in, which will be used for laundry and cleaning. You could also use empty dish washing soap bottles and bleach bottle as well. We have also reused 2- & 3-liter soda bottles to hold extra drinking water. Be creative, what do you use that comes in a bottle in which you can fill with water when it is emptied. It is not advised using empty bleach bottles for drinking water, nor reusing empty milk jugs as they will leak.

I can’t possibly have pictures of all of the possible containers used for water storage, from small to ginormous. Just type in “Water Storage” into the search bar and lots of images will come up. Keep in mind rain catchment if it is legal where you live. I know our laws were recently changed for the positive.

I will make the firm resolve to take better care of my family in this area.
