Growing up, I learned that storing food was very important. I remember cases of cans in closets, white buckets in the storage room attached to our carport, while in Phoenix. When we moved to Price we were fortunate to have a basement. Dad built shelves for mom’s canned goods, and I even remember storing water in clean milk jugs, not a good idea, and even digging a corner in the garage to make a root or potato cellar.
I knew that storage was what I wanted when we got married. I do remember one of my favorite places that we lived in, before our oldest was born, we were managing a house for college girls, just up the street from Rick’s College, was a very nice food storage room.
Through the years, our storage space grew. In our oldest sons room when we lived in Murray, we built 2 shelf units, with backs and put them in a corner of the room, with a wooden door with a latch so that I had a little corner storage space and could keep our very active toddler from knocking everything to the floor. I even put buckets by his window with a board on it the make a level for him to get close to the window, kind of like a bench.
When we built our house I was so beyond excited to have one of those rooms under my porch as a cool room. But we also have more storage space as well. We named the spaces for easy recognition as the food room and the porch room.
Whatever you have for storing your food stores, being organized is a really good thing, especially for things with short shelf lives. Having order is way better than chaos.
Wendy Dewitt in my previous article……gave great examples of what they do.
In Midvale, I tried an index card in envelope system where there was an envelope for each item we had (green beans, corn, honey, peaches, etc.) and a card for each unit, be it can, container, bottle, box for the number needed for each item. (ex. 12 cards for 12 cans of green beans, etc.) That lasted until the bulletin board they were attached to got knocked off the wall, behind a door that it was hanging on, of which was carelessly done.
I had labels on magnets attached to the shelf where each item went (so they can be moved and relocated if needed. Nope, that didn’t last long.
There are countless ways to store, organize and have a rotation system. You can go as simple as using boxes with a tablecloth over them for an end or coffee table or as elaborate as some of the ideas you can find on Pinterest.
I found a video on one that I liked, by Organize Your Joy https://youtu.be/2K3phfCDz9A
And this one on creating space for food storage. https://youtu.be/8rNA36SWItE
I also found a video from The Prepper Nerd, on inventory control that I am very impressed with and would like to do as I am share food responsibilities with my husband now and we need it easier for both of us. https://youtu.be/ZVd8T6hrVWI
Storage isn’t just about food items, it’s supplies and equipment as well. Prepper Potpourri shared how she uses the inventory control system mentioned above, and how she manages all of her prep items. https://youtu.be/KGg-Wru59cM
You can do it. Start small but at least start. You will be blessed for your efforts.
