This is a long-lived joke through the ages. We leave the table having eaten too much. Filling our fridges with leftovers galore and maybe even throwing away a lot of food because we have too much and are tired of having leftovers all week long.
Thanksgiving is more than just a table full of food. It was a day of giving thanks for a bounteous harvest. Those pilgrims suffered for lack of food throughout the winter and worked hard to provide for their needs for the coming winter. Maybe facing difficulty to make sure things were watered, fighting off insects and critters, weeding, working through hot days.
I have never felt that kind of hunger and hope to never will. For this cause I have plans to help insure that I don’t.
Food storage, learning to garden, saving seeds, canning, freezing, dehydrating, making less at meals to not have leftovers, and when we do have leftovers, striving to use that food rather having it go bad and throwing it away. And after this last year, with shortages, remember there may be a time that there is no grocery store.
I need to remember there are many people who won’t even have a Thanksgiving dinner. That there are so many who would look at our tables in unbelief of the amount we have, how we stuff ourselves until we feel like we cannot move, and the immense amount of food that we throw away.
I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. That you have enough to eat now and in the future. I wish you the desire to learn ways to provide for your future needs. That we are all better stewards of the food we do have available to us, and reduce waste.
You can freeze, dehydrate and can leftover turkey, dehydrate left over mashed potatoes and gravy, can freeze pie and after you thaw it can put it in an over to crisp it up. The internet has a lot of information of what you can do with certain things to preserve them for later use.
