I don’t think I am the only one to look at this past year and a half in awe. We went through so much. In our area we experienced an earthquake, a racoon in our towns water tank requiring a boil notice, and remember ALL of the empty shelves of TP, cleaning supplies and hand sanitizer?
And let’s not forget Covid-19 and all of the lost jobs, closures, and the rationing? Then, the inability to see family and friends, to even go to church for goodness sake.
Our family went through a big hit when my husband had to take early retirement due to health issues. We had a modest food storage, we received help from family and our church, plus I was working 3 part-time jobs and we weren’t quite making it. After some time I was able to get a full time job, gave up two of those part-time jobs and also worked nights with one of the three jobs.
Three months before I got my full-time job, I broke my ankle, putting me on temporary leave from my highest paying job, for three months.
I get to look back and ask myself, did it make a difference? I mean really. What things did I learn and am changing and what things am I not learning and not changing? Yet!
Let me point out a few that I am working on:
- Do I have enough food on hand to feed my family, un-fancy meals, but keep us alive?
- Do I have enough water stored?
- How are my gardening skills?
- Do we have money in the bank for hard times?
- Do I have job skills to get another job if I needed to?
There are some things I can say yes to and others where I need a lot of work. How am I going to make things better? Where do I begin.
Let me point out, food storage and emergency preparedness has been a big part of my life since even before I was born. My mother did it. Her mother did it. Yes, even her mother did it (I remember seeing there old root cellar when I was a kid).
I have been an Emergency Preparedness Chairman a couple of times, I was a member of The CERT program, I’ve taken first-aid courses.
Yet with that ‘impressive‘ resume (NOT), I was nowhere near to where I needed to be.
Since, we are all facing the same road of life before us, I have put together a series of articles covering these questions and a few others that came up for me more recently. I would really like comments and input as well so we can all learn. After-all, are we not on the same journey and no one person has all of the answers )(ever if I like to think I do). I will be sharing links to videos, pins, social media posts, books/articles, and knowledge of either myself or those who I know personally.
Disclaimer: I am not a Doomsday Deb, The Nana Prepper or anything outrageous (of course, you can have your own opinion), I am just someone who is concerned first, for my family, and my friends and community. After-all, isn’t that what we are?
With September being Preparedness Moth it’s a perfect time to do this. I will break things down as this should not and need not be overwhelming. Take things at you own pace. Some things will take a few days, while others will take a few weeks or even months. But let’s not put this off. After-all, the goal is to be better prepared today, than yesterday.
I’ll see ya tomorrow.
